Cystic acne, also called Nodulocystic acne is a type of acne the causes hard, large masses that may be filled with fluid to form on the skin. This type of acne can form in many places on the body, but most often forms on the face. There are some special products that you will need to use to treat cystic acne.

First, you need to choose very gentle cleansers which have been made for sensitive skin. Cystic acne is inflammatory and the use of harsh cleansers can aggravate the problem. Cleansers should be made without perfumes or harsh chemicals. The harsh chemicals may cause more irritation and the drying of your skin. Choose a soap which is has very few artificial ingredients. Try to avoid scrubbing the skin or using any abrasive cleaners on the face. It your skin is too dry or is stripped of its natural moisture, the problem can become even worse. Effective cleansing is produced by lathering your face with soap and rinsing it with warm water.

Medicated creams that contain benzoyl peroxide are the only effective medications for cystic acne. This type of acne is very severe and the medication is one of the few treatments that actually do work.

The medication should be used in its lowest available strength, 2. 5 percent. Do not use the stronger solutions as they can cause further inflammation of this type of acne. Higher strengths can actually cause a chemical burn on the skin. In addition the product can cause the skin to become too dry and flaky. The cream should be massaged into the skin gently using the fingertips only. It needs to be spread around until it dries on the skin.

The final step is to add moisturizer to the skin. While many people fear that adding a moisturizer to already dried skin can cause further problems with oily skin, the exact opposite is true. If you allow your skin to become overly dry with the use of benzoyl peroxide, acne will take longer to heal. You will need an oil free moisturizer or lotion. Once again the moisturizer should be made for sensitive skin. Use a dime sized amount of the moisturizer on the skin after each use of benzoyl peroxide. This will lessen the chances of irritating the acne and keep skin soft.
